The submandibular region is the area located below the lower jaw (mandible) and bounded by the mandible’s lower border and the anterior and posterior bellies of the digastric muscle, with the mylohyoid forming the floor. The primary contents of this region include the submandibular gland, which is one of the major salivary glands, as well as submandibular lymph nodes, portions of the facial artery and facial vein, and the submandibular duct (Wharton’s duct) that transports saliva from the gland to the floor of the mouth. The lingual nerve and the nerve to mylohyoid are nearby, forming important neurovascular relationships in this area.

The submandibular gland is innervated parasympathetically by secretomotor fibers carried by the chorda tympani (a branch of the facial nerve) that join the lingual nerve. Sympathetic fibers from the superior cervical ganglion contribute to glandular blood flow regulation. Vascular supply comes mainly from branches of the facial artery, with drainage into the facial vein. Lymphatic drainage from the submandibular region typically targets the submandibular lymph nodes.

Clinical relevance includes conditions such as sialadenitis (inflammation of the submandibular gland), sialolithiasis (salivary stones affecting Wharton’s duct), and various benign or malignant tumors. Accurate identification of anatomy in this region is important for surgical planning and the management of infections or masses.
