Subkutaneális is a Latin term meaning "under the skin." In medicine, it refers to the layer of tissue located directly beneath the dermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. This layer is also known as the hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue.

The subcutaneous layer is primarily composed of loose connective tissue and fat. The fat within this layer serves several important functions, including insulation to maintain body temperature, cushioning to protect underlying organs from impact, and energy storage. The amount of subcutaneous fat varies significantly among individuals and is influenced by factors such as genetics, diet, and activity level.

In clinical practice, "subkutaneális" is often used to describe routes of administration for medications and injections. A subcutaneous injection delivers medication into the subcutaneous tissue. This method is commonly used for drugs that are absorbed slowly and steadily, such as insulin, certain vaccines, and some hormonal therapies. The subcutaneous route is preferred over intramuscular injections for certain medications because it offers a more consistent absorption rate and can be self-administered by patients with minimal training.

The anatomy of the subcutaneous layer also includes blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels that supply the skin and underlying tissues. These structures play vital roles in nutrient delivery, waste removal, and sensory perception. Conditions affecting the subcutaneous layer can include lipomas (benign fatty tumors), cellulitis (a bacterial infection), and lipodystrophy (a disorder affecting fat distribution).
