Subjunctivegulative

Subjunctivegulative is a term used in theoretical linguistics to describe a proposed grammatical mood that merges subjunctive semantics with regulative or normative force. It is not part of established grammar systems and has limited, where present, use in discussions about hypothetical or counterfactual scenarios that carry obligation, permission, or recommendation.

The term is a portmanteau of subjunctive and regulative (or regulatory) and is typically described as a mood or mood-like construction that signals both non-realized or hypothetical content and a directive or normative stance conditioned by that content. In this view, a subjunctivegulative clause conveys what should or must happen if a stated hypothetical condition holds, rather than simply reporting a potential or imagined situation.

Morphology and syntax are debated in the literature. Some analyses posit a dedicated subjunctivegulative marking: a subjunctive-like verb form combined with a regulative marker such as a modal auxiliary or a bound particle. Others treat it as a periphrastic construction where a conditional clause interacts with a regulative element in the main clause. The placement of the regulative marker can vary across proposed models, but it is generally tied to the hypothetical antecedent.

Examples in English-like illustration include sentences such as: If she were to join the team, she must comply with the code of conduct. Should you arrive late, you ought to inform the organizers. These illustrate the combination of hypothetical content with normative force, which is the defining intuition behind the concept.
