Subjectauxiliary is a term used in linguistics to describe the relationship between the subject of a clause and the auxiliary verb that accompanies it. The auxiliary is a function word such as have, be, do, will, can, or must that marks tense, aspect, mood, voice, or modality. The relative order of subject and auxiliary helps determine the clause's syntactic structure and information focus.

In English, the subject-auxiliary configuration is especially evident in question formation. In declaratives the subject typically precedes the auxiliary: The committee has approved the plan. To form a yes/no question, the auxiliary moves to precede the subject: Has the committee approved the plan? If there is no auxiliary, English uses do-support: Do you like the plan? Wh-questions also involve inversion: What have you seen?

Cross-linguistically, subjectauxiliary behavior varies. Some languages use true subject-auxiliary inversion in questions; others rely on verb-final or verb-second orders, inflectional marking, or particles to indicate interrogativity, mood, or tense without swapping the subject and auxiliary. In languages with rich agreement morphology, the subject and auxiliary information can be encoded in a single inflected verb form, reducing the need for separate inversion.
