Subepitheliale

Subepitheliale is a descriptive term used in anatomy, histology, and pathology to indicate a location beneath the epithelium. In English-language usage, the corresponding term is commonly subepithelial; subepitheliale appears in some European or Latinized medical texts to express the same idea. The term is primarily descriptive and does not by itself imply a specific disease.

Anatomical context: Epithelial tissues rest on a basement membrane, with underlying connective tissue forming the lamina propria in mucosal sites or the dermis in the skin. Subepithelial refers to tissue situated just below the epithelial basement membrane, within the subepithelial region. This area can contain various components, including connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, and immune cells, and it may participate in normal physiology as well as pathology.
