A subdiscipline is a subdivision of a broader discipline that concentrates on a narrower set of questions, phenomena, or methods. It helps scholars organize knowledge and coordinate research effort within a field.

In academia, subdisciplines guide curricula, the publication of specialized journals, and the organization of conferences. They also influence funding priorities and peer review by aligning projects with established subfields. Subdisciplines are often identified by shared theories, data sources, measurement techniques, or subject matter.
