Subdimensions

Subdimensions is an informal term used to describe dimensions that exist within a larger space. It refers to subsets that carry their own dimensionality, typically realized as subspaces, submanifolds, or affine subspaces with fewer degrees of freedom than the ambient space. The notion appears across mathematics, physics, and data science as a way to discuss parts of a system that behave independently in a lower-dimensional setting.

In mathematics, a subspace of a vector space is a subset closed under addition and scalar multiplication and has a well-defined dimension equal to the size of a basis. For example, a line or a plane within R^n are subspaces of dimension 1 or 2, respectively, and a hyperplane has dimension n−1. In differential geometry, a submanifold is a subset that is itself a manifold of lower dimension, with its own smooth structure. In topology, a subspace inherits the ambient space’s topology, forming a space in its own right.

In physics and other applied fields, subdimensions appear in discussions of theories with extra dimensions, where effective lower-dimensional sectors are studied, such as compactified dimensions or branes. In data analysis and machine learning, dimension reduction yields a coordinate subspace defined by a subset of features or by principal components, representing the data in fewer dimensions.
