Støttevevet, also known as connective tissue in English, is a diverse and essential category of biological tissue found in animals. It plays a crucial role in providing structural support, connecting different tissues and organs, and facilitating various physiological functions. Connective tissue is characterized by its extracellular matrix, which consists of fibers and ground substance produced by specialized cells embedded within it.

The primary components of connective tissue include fibroblasts, which synthesize and maintain the extracellular matrix, as well as various other cell types such as adipocytes (fat cells), macrophages (immune cells), and mast cells (involved in allergic responses). The extracellular matrix itself is composed of collagen fibers, which provide tensile strength; elastic fibers, which allow for stretch and recoil; and ground substance, a gel-like material that fills the spaces between cells and fibers.

Connective tissue can be broadly classified into several types, including loose connective tissue (such as areolar and adipose tissue), dense connective tissue (like tendons and ligaments), cartilage, bone, and blood. Each type serves distinct functions, from cushioning and insulation to structural reinforcement and immune defense. For example, tendons and ligaments, composed of dense regular connective tissue, connect muscles to bones and bones to each other, respectively, enabling movement and stability.

In addition to its mechanical roles, connective tissue plays a vital part in the body’s immune response, wound healing, and nutrient storage. Disorders affecting connective tissue, such as arthritis or fibrosis, can lead to significant health issues, highlighting its importance in maintaining overall physiological function. Proper nutrition, hydration, and lifestyle factors also influence the health and integrity of connective tissue throughout the body.
