Studieförbundet

Studieförbundet is a term used in Sweden for non-profit organizations that promote non-formal adult education. These associations operate within the broader folkbildningen (folk education) tradition and typically offer study circles, courses, lectures, and cultural activities. They are often affiliated with religious groups, trade unions, or secular organizations but function as independent bodies focused on lifelong learning and civic participation.

Historically, studieförbunden arose in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the popular education movement, with aims to broaden access to education, foster democratic engagement, and strengthen civil society. Over time, a number of major studieförbund have formed, creating a nationwide network that collaborates with municipalities, libraries, schools, and cultural institutions to reach a wide audience.

Activities typically center on study circles (studiecirkel), where small groups study a topic guided by a trained leader. In addition, studieförbunden arrange language courses, cultural events, lectures, and information campaigns. The content often covers culture, current affairs, history, crafts, and language learning, with a focus on participation, inclusion, and critical thinking.

Governance and funding involve autonomous member associations with local chapters and boards. The studieförbund receive state subsidies for adult education and may also rely on course fees, membership dues, and municipal support. They operate within the national framework for folkbildning, collaborating with public authorities and civil society actors to facilitate accessible education outside formal schooling.
