Strykere

Strykere is a term used in Scandinavian languages, principally Norwegian and Danish, with several related senses in music and everyday language. Most commonly it denotes the string section of an orchestra or the group of musicians who play bowed string instruments—violins, violas, cellos and double basses. In this musical sense strykere refers both to ensemble sections in orchestral and chamber contexts and, more generally, to performers who use a bow to produce sound.

Etymologically the word derives from verbs meaning “to stroke” or “to draw” (related to the action of bowing), and its musical usage emphasizes the bowing gesture that characterizes these instruments. Roles within a strykere section include first and second violin parts, inner voices such as viola and cello, and bass lines on double bass; the section frequently forms the melodic and harmonic core of Western classical orchestration.

Outside music, strykere is the plural of stryker/stryke in Scandinavian languages and may refer to someone who irons clothes or, in some regional or historical usages, to a drifter or vagrant; these senses are less prominent in modern usage. The term also appears in names of ensembles, local cultural contexts and occasional translations of “string players” in program notes and musicology. As with many multilingual terms, precise meaning depends on context.
