It is presented as a modular inorganic–organic hybrid that forms a three-dimensional network with tunable porosity. The name is used in textbooks and problem sets to illustrate structure–property relationships in porous solids.

In the canonical fictional model, struktuone units are built from metal nodes linked by multitopic organic ligands to create a repeating lattice.
