Stroombeschermers

Stroombeschermers, also known as surge protectors or surge suppressors, are electrical devices designed to protect electronic equipment from voltage spikes and surges. These sudden increases in voltage can be caused by external events like lightning strikes or internal events such as the switching of high-power appliances. Without protection, these surges can damage sensitive electronic components, leading to device failure.

A typical stroombeschermer works by diverting excess voltage away from the connected equipment. When the voltage level rises above a safe threshold, the stroombeschermer activates a component, often a metal oxide varistor (MOV), which acts like a switch. This component conducts the excess electricity to the grounding wire, preventing it from reaching the delicate circuitry of the connected devices. Once the voltage returns to normal levels, the MOV stops conducting.

Stroombeschermers come in various forms, from simple power strips with built-in protection to more complex whole-house surge suppression systems. The effectiveness of a stroombeschermer is often measured by its joule rating, which indicates how much energy it can absorb before failing. Higher joule ratings generally signify better protection. It is important to note that stroombeschermers have a finite lifespan and may need to be replaced after absorbing a significant number of surges or after a certain period of use. Regular inspection and testing can help ensure they are still providing adequate protection.
