Stripbuilding

Stripbuilding is a construction technique used in making model aircraft and boats, where narrow strips of wood or other flexible materials are formed over a framework to create the surface of the model. In aircraft modeling, strips are typically cut from balsa, spruce, or light plywood, and are commonly 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. Strips are tapered to help produce smooth curves. In boatbuilding, strip planking uses thin wood strips installed over a skeletal frame to produce a hull shape.

The process begins with planning the shape and preparing a mold, form, or complete frame such as ribs and longerons. Strips are laid one by one, often starting from a baseline and working upward, with adhesive applied between strips. The grain direction is considered to improve strength and finish. After a layer is complete, additional layers may be added for stiffness. Once the glue has set, the surface is faired with sanding and filler as needed, and the skin is finished with tissue, film, epoxy, or paint depending on the model and method.

Advantages of stripbuilding include the ability to form complex, rounded shapes without heavy molds, a smooth surface, and a lightweight skin. Disadvantages include longer build times, a higher skill requirement for fairing and bending strips without gaps, and careful moisture control for certain materials.

Overall, stripbuilding is valued for producing accurate, aesthetically smooth bodies and skins, particularly where curved surfaces and light weight are important, and it remains a popular method in both hobbyist and scale modeling communities.
