Strikgeving

Strikgeving is a Dutch term that is not widely attested as a standard concept in modern usage. When it appears, it is usually treated as a noun formed from strik (a knot, binding, or decorative bow) with the suffix -geving, which signals an action or process. In this sense, strikgeving can refer to the act of tying a knot, binding something with a knot, or arranging a knot or bow in crafts such as rope work, textiles, or floral decoration. Because strik also denotes a ribbon or bow, strikgeving may occasionally denote the creation or placement of a bow or ribbon.

The term is most often found in historical, regional, or specialized contexts, and is rare in everyday language. In contemporary Dutch, speakers more commonly use terms like strikken (to tie a knot or bow) or phrases describing the specific craft, such as het maken van een strik or knooptechnieken, depending on the context.

Strikgeving should be distinguished from unrelated uses of similar language, such as references to policy-related “striking” or other forms of enforcement or binding, where different terminology is used. If strikgeving appears in a text, readers should assess whether the author intends a literal description of knot-tying and decoration, or a metaphorical sense of binding or enclosing something.
