Origins and usage: The term has appeared mainly in speculative reviews and exploratory studies rather than in standardized experimental protocols. It is not tied to a single experimental method or dataset; rather, researchers use it to frame hypotheses about how chronic or acute stress might influence telomere attrition and telomerase regulation across tissues.

Mechanisms: The proposed pathways involve activation of the HPA axis with glucocorticoid signaling, sympathetic nervous system activity, increased oxidative stress and inflammation, and subsequent effects on telomere maintenance. Telomerase activity and cellular replication history are often discussed as modulators in stressztl models. Individual differences in genetics, early life experiences, and lifestyle (e.g., sleep, nutrition, physical activity) may moderate the impact.

Applications and limitations: The framework guides interpretation of correlations between stress measures and telomere length observed in observational studies and some experimental work. Critics point to methodological variability in telomere assays, tissue specificity, and the predominance of correlational data, arguing that stressztl remains a theory rather than a proven mechanism.
