Stressmarked

Stressmarked is an adjective used in linguistics and lexicography to describe a word, text, or language system in which the position of lexical stress is explicitly indicated in the written form or in phonetic transcription. The term covers explicit orthographic marking of stress, such as diacritics or special symbols, as well as annotated transcriptions where primary and secondary stresses are indicated by standard markers like IPA’s ˈ and ˌ, or by accent marks in dictionaries.

In practice, stress marking is common in several language contexts. In Spanish, orthographic accents mark stress on syllables that deviate from standard rules, as in árbol. In many phonetic dictionaries and IPA transcriptions, word stress is shown with a preceding ˈ for the primary stressed syllable. Some language technologies rely on stressmarked data to improve speech synthesis and recognition, training models with explicit stress labels.

Advantages of stressmarked representations include aiding language learners and researchers in phonology, improving the accuracy of text-to-speech systems, and enhancing corpus annotation. Limitations include the fact that stress can be fluid or context-dependent, orthographic conventions vary by language and dialect, and transcription may not always reflect actual spoken prosody. Consequently, the concept of stressmarked often arises in discussions of orthography design, linguistic annotation schemes, and speech-technology pipelines.
