Stressitestaus

Stress testing, or stressitestaus, is a software testing technique that assesses how a system behaves under extreme conditions beyond normal operating capacity. Its aim is to identify breaking points, failure modes, and recovery behavior, verifying that safety mechanisms such as autoscaling or failover respond correctly when demand exceeds expectations.

It differs from load testing, which measures performance under expected workloads, and from endurance testing, which checks stability over long periods. Stress tests may include spike testing (sudden loads) and ramp testing (gradual increases) and can apply to applications, databases, APIs, networks, or infrastructure.

Process: define objectives and thresholds; design realistic scenarios; prepare a production-like test environment; select metrics; execute tests; monitor resources; and analyze results to identify bottlenecks and recovery characteristics. Reproduce issues in staging, avoid production impact, and coordinate with stakeholders.

Key metrics include response time and latency distribution, error rate, throughput, CPU, memory, disk I/O, network saturation, and time to recover. Common tools are JMeter, Locust, Gatling, k6, and LoadRunner, along with cloud services and monitoring stacks to visualize trends during the test.

Best practices include starting with smaller scopes, isolating tests to avoid data corruption, using realistic test data, and ensuring safe rollback. Be mindful of cost and risk, document findings, and plan capacity or architectural changes to address identified weaknesses.
