Strengthbuilding is the practice of increasing muscular strength through resistance training. It centers on progressive overload—systematically increasing the resistance, volume, or intensity to challenge the muscles as they adapt. Training can use free weights, machines, resistance bands, or bodyweight, and programs may combine multiple exercise modalities.

Key principles include overload, specificity, variation, and adequate recovery. For most people aiming to gain maximal strength, workouts emphasize lower repetitions with heavier loads (roughly 1–6 reps per set) and longer rest periods (about 2–5 minutes). For hypertrophy or general fitness, moderate reps (6–12) and shorter rests (60–90 seconds) are common. Over time, volume (sets × reps × load) and intensity are progressively increased.

Typical exercises include squats, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses, rows, and chin-ups or pull-ups. Programs often feature 2–4 workouts per week, with each major muscle group trained multiple times per week or per cycle.

Safety and injury prevention are central: begin with a proper warm-up, learn technique, use appropriate loads, progress gradually, and include rest days. Adequate protein intake, calories, and sleep support recovery and adaptation.
