Streetedges

Streetedges refer to the physical boundary where a street space interfaces with adjacent parcels, creating the interface between the public realm of the street and the private or semi-public realm of buildings and land uses. The streetedge is defined by elements such as the ground-floor frontage, sidewalk width, curb line, building setback or step-downs, storefronts or facades, entrances, canopies, street trees, lighting, and street furniture. Together they establish the character and pedestrian quality of a street at the human scale.

Components of streetedges include the alignment and rhythm of facades, the degree of engagement with the sidewalk (for example through display windows or entrances), the depth of setbacks, and the presence of weather protection and active uses. Edges can be categorized as active, where ground-floor uses engage the street with transparent facades and frequent entries, or passive, where the edge is dominated by blank walls or less permeable fronts.

Design considerations focus on pedestrian comfort, safety, and vitality. Principles emphasize human-scale proportions, accessibility, legibility, durability, and maintenance. A well-designed streetedge balances privacy with public access, provides shelter from weather, and maintains clear sightlines for safety. Metrics used to evaluate streetedges often include the proportion of frontage in contact with the street, ground-floor transparency, continuity of facade, and the regularity of street trees and furnishings.

In urban design practice, streetedges are central to street typologies and form-based planning, shaping how pedestrians experience streets and how built form interacts with public space.
