Straßendeckel

Straßendeckel, also known as manhole covers, are removable plates that cover the opening of a manhole, which is an underground access point to utility systems. These systems can include sewers, storm drains, telecommunications networks, electrical power grids, gas lines, and water mains. The primary purpose of a Straßendeckel is to prevent people, vehicles, or debris from falling into the manhole while still allowing authorized personnel access for maintenance, inspection, and repairs.

Straßendeckel are typically made of cast iron, ductile iron, steel, or composite materials. Cast iron has been a traditional material due to its strength and durability. Modern designs may incorporate lighter yet strong composite materials. The shape is most commonly round, as a round cover cannot fall through its own circular opening, regardless of its orientation. Square or rectangular covers are sometimes used but often have a mechanism to prevent them from being dropped into the shaft.

The surface of Straßendeckel often features a textured pattern to provide grip and prevent slipping, especially when wet. Many also bear inscriptions indicating the utility they cover or the municipality responsible for the system. The weight of a Straßendeckel varies depending on its size and material, but they are generally heavy enough to withstand the weight of traffic and prevent accidental displacement. Their presence is a ubiquitous feature of urban and suburban infrastructure.
