Stratigrafists

Stratigrafists are professionals who study stratigraphy, the science of rock layers and their relationships to time, environments of deposition, and the history of Earth’s surface. The term stratigrafist is used in some regions or organizations as an alternative to stratigrapher, though stratigrapher remains the more common English designation. Stratigrafists work across geology, archaeology, and environmental sciences to interpret the sedimentary record found in outcrops, cores, and boreholes, reconstruct past landscapes, and inform models of geological and environmental change.

In the field, stratigrafists map and measure sections, log lithology, thickness, and bed contacts, and determine the relative ages of units by lithology, fossil content, and stratigraphic position. They compile stratigraphic columns and stratigraphic nomenclature, and they apply methods such as lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and chemostratigraphy to correlate units across space and time. They integrate dating results from radiometric methods when possible, and use paleogeographic reconstructions to interpret depositional environments.

The work supports resource exploration and development, groundwater studies, geotechnical assessments, and archaeological chronology. Stratigrafists may work for universities, government geological surveys, oil and gas companies, mining firms, environmental consultancies, or cultural heritage organizations. Training typically requires a degree in geology, geography, or a related field, with field-intensive experience and proficiency in mapping, core logging, and data interpretation; professional certification or membership in geological societies is common.
