Stratigrafiaan

Stratigrafiaan is a term used in Dutch to denote a professional practice or specialization in stratigraphy, the branch of geology that studies rock layers (strata) and their arrangement through time. In standard geological usage, the practitioner is more commonly referred to as a stratigraaf, but stratigrafiaan may appear in contexts that emphasize the practical aspects of stratigraphy or its scholarly study. A stratigrafiaan interprets the sequence, thickness, lithology, fossils, and geochemical properties of sedimentary rocks to reconstruct geological history and to correlate strata across distances.

Core activities of a stratigrafiaan include field logging of stratigraphic sections, constructing stratigraphic columns, and mapping lithostratigraphic units. They work with sub-disciplines such as lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, and magnetostratigraphy.
