These are not a formal meteorological term like "cold front" or "warm front" but rather a descriptive phrase indicating a weather phenomenon characterized by intense, often severe, weather. The term "Stoßlinie" translates roughly to "thrust line" or "shock line," suggesting the forceful and abrupt nature of the weather associated with it.

These lines typically develop when unstable air masses meet, leading to rapid uplift and the formation of cumulonimbus clouds. Characteristics often include heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and lightning. The intensity of the weather can vary greatly, from moderate showers to severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes. The spatial extent of a Stoßlinie can range from a few kilometers to hundreds of kilometers.
