Stopstartjärjestelmä, also known as start-stop or idle-stop system, is an automotive technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by automatically shutting down the engine when the vehicle is stationary. The system typically activates when the vehicle comes to a complete stop, such as at a traffic light or in congestion. Sensors monitor various conditions, including vehicle speed, brake pedal position, and battery charge level, to determine when it is safe and appropriate to shut off the engine.

Once the engine is stopped, the driver can then restart it by releasing the brake pedal or engaging the clutch in manual transmission vehicles.
