Stokastisesti

Stokastisesti is an adverb in Finnish that describes something done in a stochastic, or probabilistic, manner. It refers to processes or descriptions that involve randomness and uncertainty rather than predetermined outcomes. In probability theory and statistics, a stochastic process is a collection of random variables indexed by time or space, and statements described stokastisesti are understood to hold in a probabilistic sense, often with specified distributions or likelihoods.

The term is used in contexts such as stokastinen malli (stochastic model), stokastinen prosessi (stochastic process), and stokastinen muuttuja (random variable). In contrast to deterministic descriptions, stokastinen analysis acknowledges that repeated trials under the same conditions can yield different results, governed by probability laws.

Applications span numerous fields. In finance, stokastiset mallit model asset prices and interest rates, with examples like geometric Brownian motion. In physics and engineering, stochastic models describe noise and random fluctuations. In computer science, Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic algorithms rely on randomness to solve problems or estimate quantities.

Common mathematical tools for stokastisesti modeled problems include probability distributions, expectation (mean), variance, covariance, Markov chains, and Brownian motion. These tools help quantify uncertainty, describe likely outcomes, and assess risk or performance.
