Stoffmasse

Stoffmasse is a German term that denotes the mass of a substance or material. In physics and everyday measurement, stoffmasse refers to the amount of matter in an object and is measured in kilograms or grams. It is a scalar quantity and, in classical mechanics, is distinct from weight, which depends on the local gravitational field. The relationship with density is given by M = ρ · V, where volume V is the space occupied by the object and ρ is the material density. Mass can be determined by direct weighing with a balance or scale, or indirectly from density and volume.

In textile contexts, stoffmasse commonly concerns fabrics and is closely related to fabric weight. It is often expressed as grams per square meter (g/m^2) or ounces per square yard and is referred to as fabric weight. The mass of a fabric influences properties such as drape, warmth, strength, and cost. To measure it, a standardized sample area is cut, conditioned under defined ambient conditions, and weighed with a precision balance.

Other uses of the term may appear in chemistry or materials science to denote the mass of a substance used in experiments or processes.
