Stitchworts

Stitchwort is a common name used for several species of plants in the family Caryophyllaceae. These plants are typically characterized by their small, often star-shaped white flowers, which usually have five petals. The name "stitchwort" is thought to derive from an old folk belief that the plant could cure stitches or pains in the side, a common ailment. Many stitchwort species are low-growing, herbaceous perennials or annuals.

The most well-known species is greater stitchwort (Stellaria holostea), which is a common sight in woodlands, hedgerows, and grassy areas across Europe. It has delicate, lance-shaped leaves and larger white flowers compared to some other stitchworts. Lesser stitchwort (Stellaria graminea) is another widespread species, often found in drier, more open habitats like meadows and lawns. It is generally smaller than greater stitchwort and has narrower leaves.

Other plants referred to as stitchworts include species from the genus Cerastium, commonly known as mouse-ear chickweeds. These also typically bear white flowers and are found in similar habitats. Stitchworts are generally considered to be hardy and adaptable plants, often thriving in disturbed ground. Their small seeds are dispersed by wind and water, allowing them to colonize new areas. While not typically cultivated for ornamental purposes, their natural abundance and delicate beauty make them a familiar part of many temperate landscapes.
