Stipended

Over time, the term evolved to refer to monetary support tied to specific activities, such as research, scholarship, or artistic work. The adjective “stipended” functions to characterize people, projects, or positions funded by such allowances, distinguishing them from salaried roles.

Stipends are common in several sectors, including academia (fellowships and postdoctoral appointments), the arts (artist-in-residence programs), religious and charitable organizations, and some internships or fellowships that provide living expenses in lieu of a salary. They may cover living costs, travel, or research expenses and are often stipulated by a grant, fellowship, or contract. Tax treatment and eligibility can vary by country and program, and stipends may be subject to reporting requirements separate from regular wages.
