Stickandball

Stickandball is a team sport played on a rectangular field or indoor court, in which two teams compete to score by sending a ball into the opposing team's goal using sticks that have a hooked, netted head. The game blends elements of lacrosse, field hockey, and baseball in its passing, running, and throwing actions.

Players use sticks to cradle, pass, and shoot the ball. A standard match involves two teams of seven players on a grass or artificial turf pitch. The ball is a hard, solid sphere comparable in size to a softball. Protective gear is typically encouraged for players, including mouthguards and, where allowed, eye protection.

Play is divided into halves or periods, with goals counted when the ball crosses the goal line within the confines of a rectangular frame. Teams advance the ball by passing or running with the stick, while defenders attempt to dislodge the ball with controlled stick checks. Fouls and misconduct can result in free hits, penalty corners near the goal, or suspensions for serious offenses. An offside rule restricts forward positioning to encourage spread.

Stickandball originated in North America during the early to mid-20th century as a hybrid of existing stick sports. A governing body, the Stickandball International Federation, was formed to standardize rules and organize international competitions. The sport has since grown to amateur and semi-professional levels with regional leagues and national teams.

Today, stickandball is played at schools, clubs, and community centers across several countries. Variants include an indoor version played on a smaller court and a street adaptation played with portable equipment. International tournaments and national championships contribute to its ongoing development and visibility.
