Sthanakvapis

Sthanakvasi is a sect within the Svetambara tradition of Jainism. The name Sthanakvasi translates to "those who reside in one place" or "dwellers in places," reflecting their practice of not using temples for worship. Instead, they typically worship in public halls or houses called Sthanakas.

Unlike some other Jain sects, Sthanakvasi Jains do not worship idols. Their spiritual practice focuses on adherence to the teachings of the Tirthankaras, particularly Mahavira, and emphasizes principles like ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha (non-possession), and anekantavada (many-sidedness). They follow a strict ascetic lifestyle and observe vows, though they are generally considered less austere than the Digambara sect.

The Sthanakvasi community is known for its emphasis on scriptural study and meditation. They believe that liberation can be achieved through personal effort and righteous conduct, without the need for temple rituals or idol worship. This sect originated in the 15th century in Gujarat, India, as a reform movement within Svetambara Jainism, seeking to return to what they perceived as the original teachings of Mahavira. Their practices and beliefs distinguish them from other Jain denominations, particularly regarding their views on idol worship and temple use.
