Stereomaster

Stereomaster is a term used in audio production with several related meanings. Primarily, it denotes the final stereo master recording that is prepared for distribution in stereo formats such as CD, streaming, or vinyl.

As a process, stereomastering involves optimizing the overall sonic balance after mixing. Typical steps include equalization to refine tonal balance, compression and limiting to control dynamics and maximize loudness without distortion, and stereo imaging adjustments to preserve or enhance width. Engineers apply loudness normalization, meter for peak and average levels, and apply dithering when converting to target bit depths. The goal is consistent playback across devices while retaining musical intent.

The term is also used as a brand or product name by several manufacturers and software developers. In this usage, stereomaster may refer to hardware mastering consoles, analog signal processors, or digital plugins marketed for stereo processing and loudness control.

Historically, stereo mastering emerged as the standard in the 1950s and 1960s with the transition from mono. The practice evolved with digital audio, enabling precise metering and loudness standards to suit streaming and broadcast. The concept of a stereo master remains central to the distribution chain, serving as the reference for replication and licensing.
