The procedure involves placing a small, mesh tube called a stent into the blocked vessel to keep it open and improve blood flow.

Stenting is commonly used to treat coronary artery disease, where the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked. It can also be used to treat peripheral artery disease, where the arteries that supply blood to the legs become narrowed. In some cases, stenting may be used to treat blockages in the brain, although this is less common.

The procedure is typically performed using angiography, a type of imaging that uses X-rays to visualize the blood vessels. A small catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin or wrist and guided to the blocked vessel. Once the catheter is in place, a small balloon is inflated to temporarily widen the vessel, allowing the stent to be placed. The stent is then expanded to keep the vessel open.

Stenting is generally considered a safe and effective procedure, with a low risk of complications. However, like any medical procedure, it carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, and the need for further surgery. The success of the procedure depends on various factors, including the severity of the blockage, the patient's overall health, and the skill of the surgeon performing the procedure.
