Stegopteryx is a genus of small, early pterosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 150 million years ago. Fossils of this genus have been discovered primarily in Europe, particularly in the Solnhofen limestone deposits of southern Germany. The name *Stegopteryx* derives from the Greek words *stegos*, meaning "roof," and *pteryx*, meaning "wing," referencing its distinctive cranial crest.

Stegopteryx is notable for its well-preserved fossils, which often include detailed impressions of soft tissues such as skin and membranes. These fossils provide valuable insights into the appearance and biology of this pterosaur. The species *Stegopteryx elegans* is the most well-known, characterized by its elongated, wing-like membrane stretching from its body to its elongated fourth finger. Its skull was relatively small, with a prominent, upward-curving crest that may have played a role in species recognition or display.
