Startwoche

Startwoche, literally “start week,” is a term used in German-speaking higher education to describe the introductory orientation period for new students at the beginning of the academic year. It is offered by many universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and is sometimes used by other institutions with German-language programs. The main purpose is to ease the transition to university life, help newcomers understand their study programs, and foster social integration.

A Startwoche typically lasts several days and combines information sessions with social activities. Participants receive practical guidance on enrolment procedures, registration for modules, and the use of IT systems, libraries, and student services. Sessions often cover study regulations, examination timetables, and how to contact faculties, tutors, and advisors. There are usually campus tours, introductions to student organizations and advisory services, and opportunities to meet peers from different programs. Additional components may include information on housing, health insurance, safety, international student support, and language help for newcomers.

Organization and format vary by institution, but Startwoche is usually coordinated by the central student services office in collaboration with faculties, departments, and student associations. Attendance is commonly encouraged and sometimes required, depending on the university. In some places, Startwoche events are offered in both in-person and online formats, or are supplemented by virtual materials to accommodate different student needs.
