StarCraft

StarCraft is a real-time strategy video game franchise developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The original game StarCraft, released in 1998, introduced three distinct playable species—Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss—in the Koprulu Sector. An expansion, StarCraft: Brood War (1998), added missions and balance changes. StarCraft II began in 2010 with Wings of Liberty, followed by Heart of the Swarm (2013) and Legacy of the Void (2015). A remastered edition, StarCraft: Remastered, released in 2017, updated visuals and audio for the original game and Brood War.

Gameplay centers on base-building, resource management, and tactical combat. Players harvest minerals and vespene gas, construct structures, and train units to defeat opponents. The three races differ in philosophy and mechanics: Terrans rely on versatile, mobile units and mechanical defenses; Zerg favor speed, large numbers, and biological morphing; Protoss use advanced, costly units and warp-based reinforcement.

StarCraft's campaign presents a science-fiction narrative about interstellar factions and political intrigue within the Koprulu Sector. StarCraft played a significant role in establishing organized competitive play, particularly in South Korea, where professional leagues and televised matches helped popularize eSports. The franchise's balance-focused design, expansive lore, and ongoing community support have sustained interest through sequels, remasters, and related media.
