Standardipaineen is a Finnish term that translates to standard pressure. In scientific contexts, it refers to a reference pressure value used for defining and comparing physical properties of substances, particularly gases. The most commonly used standard pressure in chemistry is 1 bar, which is equivalent to 100,000 pascals. However, historically, 1 atmosphere (atm) was also widely used as standard pressure, defined as exactly 101,325 pascals. This difference, while small, can be significant in precise thermodynamic calculations.

The concept of standard pressure is crucial for establishing standard states. A standard state for a substance is a defined set of conditions under which its properties are measured and tabulated. For gases, this typically includes a standard pressure and a standard temperature, often 298.15 Kelvin (25 degrees Celsius). By specifying standard pressure, scientists can ensure that data collected by different researchers or at different times are comparable. For example, the molar volume of an ideal gas at standard temperature and pressure (STP) has specific values depending on which standard pressure is adopted.
