The concept encompasses how stem cells interact with neighboring cells, extracellular matrix, and soluble factors to maintain tissue homeostasis and enable regeneration.

The stamcelleniche comprises multiple components. Cellular elements include stromal cells, endothelial cells, osteoblasts, and immune cells that provide signals and metabolic support. The extracellular matrix offers structural cues and ligand interactions. Soluble factors such as cytokines, growth factors, and chemokines (for example CXCL12) mediate communication within the niche.
