Stadtrechte
Stadtrecht (Stadtrechte) refers to the set of privileges and the legal framework granted to a settlement by a sovereign authority, enabling it to function as a self-governing town with its own courts, finances, and economic rights. In medieval and early modern German-speaking lands, towns obtained Stadtrecht through charters or Imperial privileges. The charter typically specified rights and duties and often included jurisdiction, fortifications, market rights, tolls, coinage privileges, and the eligibility of citizens.
