Stablemennonites

The Old Order Mennonites, often referred to as Stable Mennonites due to their practice of stabling horses instead of using automobiles, are a group of conservative Anabaptist Christians. They are a subgroup within the broader Mennonite tradition, characterized by a commitment to a simple lifestyle, separation from the world, and adherence to traditional interpretations of scripture. Their lifestyle emphasizes community, plain dress, and avoidance of modern technologies perceived to be worldly or detrimental to spiritual life. This often includes restrictions on electricity, telephones, and internet access.

The Stable Mennonites trace their origins to a 17th-century schism within the Mennonite church in Europe, led by Jakob Ammann. Ammann advocated for stricter adherence to certain church practices, including the shunning of excommunicated members. Over time, many of these conservative groups emigrated from Europe, primarily to North America, where they established distinct communities. Today, these communities are found in various parts of the United States and Canada. They often maintain their own schools and engage in farming and craft-based vocations. Their social structure is deeply rooted in family and church life, with a strong emphasis on mutual aid and support within the community.
