Stabilitetsproblem refers to the questions and methods used to determine whether a system remains close to or returns to a stable state after perturbations. It is a central concern in disciplines such as mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, and biology, where systems are described by differential or difference equations, network dynamics, or optimization processes.

In dynamical systems, stability is categorized by several notions. Lyapunov stability requires that every small disturbance keeps the state near the equilibrium for all future times. Asymptotic stability strengthens this to eventual convergence, and exponential stability specifies a bound that decays at an exponential rate. For linear systems, stability often reduces to eigenvalue analysis.

Methods to certify stability include linearization, Lyapunov functions, and invariance principles. In continuous-time systems, all eigenvalues must lie in the left half-plane; in discrete-time, eigenvalues must lie inside the unit circle. Practical control design uses feedback to place poles and ensure robustness, with concepts such as BIBO stability and gain/phase margins.

Beyond engineering, stabilitetsproblem arises in macroeconomic models, ecological networks, and chemical reaction systems, where stable equilibria prevent runaway behavior. Computational approaches combine numerical simulation with analytical tools such as linear matrix inequalities for constructing Lyapunov functions or using spectral methods for large systems.

Stability analysis remains challenging in nonlinear, time-varying, or delayed systems, where small disturbances can have disproportionate effects. Ongoing research emphasizes robust stability under uncertainty and model reduction while preserving essential stability properties.
