Stabiilsuskontrollisüsteemi, commonly known as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), is a crucial safety feature in modern vehicles. Its primary function is to prevent loss of traction, thereby helping drivers maintain control during sudden maneuvers or slippery conditions. The system works by continuously monitoring the vehicle's steering angle, wheel speed, and lateral acceleration. When it detects that the vehicle is about to skid or lose control, it intervenes automatically.

The system achieves this by selectively applying brakes to individual wheels and, in some cases, by reducing engine power. For instance, if the car is understeering (tending to go straight when the driver wants to turn), ESC will apply the brake to the inside rear wheel to help the car pivot around that corner. Conversely, if the car is oversteering (the rear of the car slides out), ESC will apply the brake to the outside front wheel to counteract the slide. These subtle, rapid adjustments are typically imperceptible to the driver, but they can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

ESC systems are designed to be a supplement to, not a replacement for, safe driving practices. They are particularly effective in preventing single-vehicle rollovers and sideslip accidents. Many countries now mandate the inclusion of ESC in new vehicles due to its proven effectiveness in enhancing road safety. The technology has evolved over time, becoming more sophisticated and integrated with other vehicle safety systems.
