Störfelder are geological formations composed of loosely consolidated sedimentary deposits that form distinctive field-like patterns in arid and semi-arid landscapes. The term originates from German, meaning "disturbance fields" or "interference fields," reflecting their disrupted appearance compared to surrounding terrain.

These formations typically develop in desert environments where wind erosion and deflation processes selectively remove finer sediment particles, leaving behind coarser materials such as gravel, pebbles, and stone fragments. Over time, this differential erosion creates irregular polygonal patterns on the landscape surface, with raised edges surrounding depressed centers. The resulting topography resembles a series of interconnected fields or cells, hence the descriptive name.

Störfelder are commonly found in regions with specific geological and climatic conditions. They require a source of mixed sediment sizes, typically derived from nearby mountain ranges or elevated terrain. The area must experience sufficient wind activity to drive erosion processes, while also maintaining relatively stable conditions that allow the characteristic patterns to develop and persist over long periods.

The formation process involves multiple stages of weathering, erosion, and deposition. Initially, mixed sediments are transported by wind and water across the landscape. Finer particles are gradually removed through deflation, while larger particles accumulate in sheltered areas. This sorting process continues over thousands of years, eventually creating the distinctive stör field morphology.

Störfelder serve important ecological functions in desert ecosystems, providing microhabitats that support specialized plant and animal communities. The varied topography creates niches with different moisture retention properties and microclimates. These formations also offer insights into past climatic conditions and geological processes, making them valuable subjects for scientific research in geomorphology and paleoenvironmental studies.
