There are two main types of skin grafts: autografts and allografts. Autografts involve taking skin from the patient's own body. This is the most common type as it minimizes the risk of rejection. Allografts involve using skin from a donor, which can be either from another human (allogeneic graft) or from an animal (xenogeneic graft). Donor skin is often used for larger surface area burns where there isn't enough healthy skin on the patient's own body.

The procedure itself involves harvesting a thin or thick layer of skin from a donor site. This harvested skin is then carefully placed onto the wound bed. The area is then dressed to protect the graft and encourage it to integrate with the underlying tissues. Successful skin grafting relies on good blood supply to the recipient site and proper immobilization of the graft.
