Squeegees

A squeegee is a hand tool used to remove liquid from flat surfaces. It consists of a flat blade, usually made of natural or synthetic rubber, stretched across a frame, with a handle for grip. Frames are commonly metal or plastic, and blades are replaceable. Widths range from several inches for small jobs to more than a foot for large panes.

Technique involves positioning the blade at a shallow angle to the surface and pulling or pushing in smooth, overlapping strokes. The blade scrapes along the surface, pushing water ahead of it while leaving a dry edge. Proper pressure and angle help minimize streaks and protect the surface from scratches.

Variants include window squeegees for glass, shower squeegees designed for bathroom walls, and floor or utility squeegees used in janitorial and industrial settings. Some models feature curved or flexible blades to reach corners, wall-mounted holders, or extended handles for tall panes. Car-wash tools also use specialized squeegees for windshields and panels.

Materials and maintenance: blades may be natural or synthetic rubber, with some blades made from neoprene or EPDM. Replace blades when nicked or cracked, and clean the blade and frame after use to prevent residue buildup. Store with the blade protected or dry to extend life. When selecting a squeegee, consider blade width, frame durability, handle length, and blade material suited to the working surface.

History: Squeegees have been widely used since the early twentieth century for cleaning glass and other flat surfaces. They remain a common tool in households and professional cleaning due to their efficiency and simple design.
