Squarehewing

Squarehewing is a traditional woodworking technique used to flatten and shape timber, typically logs, into a more manageable squared-off form. This process is essential for creating beams, posts, and other structural elements for buildings, furniture, and other wooden constructions. The primary tool used for squarehewing is the hewing axe, also known as a broadaxe. This specialized axe features a long, curved handle and a wide, flat blade designed for slicing rather than chopping.

The hewing process involves striking the log with the hewing axe in a controlled manner, removing chips of wood to create flat surfaces. The craftsman uses their body weight and the swing of the axe to guide the cut, aiming to achieve a uniform plane. This requires considerable skill and practice to achieve straight, smooth surfaces and precise angles. Historically, squarehewing was a labor-intensive but effective method for preparing timber before the widespread adoption of sawmills and power tools. The resulting hewn timbers often display characteristic tool marks that are visible even after subsequent finishing, serving as a testament to the craftsman's work. While less common today due to modern milling techniques, squarehewing is still practiced by some timber framers, historical reenactors, and woodworkers who appreciate its traditional aesthetic and connection to craftsmanship.
