Spülungslösung

Spülungslösung is a term used in German-speaking medical and dental contexts to describe a sterile liquid that is intended to rinse, flush or irrigate a body cavity, wound, duct, or tissue area. The primary purpose of such solutions is to remove debris, secretions or microorganisms and to aid in healing. In some cases, medications or antiseptics may be added to the solution, depending on the clinical purpose.

Common forms and compositions include isotonic saline solution (sodium chloride 0.9%) and other sterile irrigants such as sterile water or balanced salt solutions. In dental and endodontic practice, specialized irrigants, such as sodium hypochlorite, EDTA or chlorhexidine, are used for disinfection and smear layer removal, with concentrations carefully chosen to balance efficacy and tissue safety. For everyday wound care or nasal, ear, or wound irrigation, plain saline or sterile water are frequently employed. Antiseptic spülung solutions may also be used, but often at lower concentrations to minimize tissue irritation.

Applications span several areas: wound care and surgery (to cleanse and irrigate wounds or operative sites), dentistry (root canal irrigation and periodontal therapy), and otolaryngology (nasal or sinus irrigation). In clinical settings, spülungslösungen are typically prepared as sterile, single-use preparations or stored under strict aseptic conditions, with attention to storage, temperature and shelf life. Safety considerations include avoiding cytotoxic concentrations of antiseptics, monitoring for allergies, and preventing contamination during use. Regulatory classifications vary by country and depend on whether the product is considered a pharmaceutical sterile solution or a medical device-related irrigation fluid.
