Sportballen

Sportballen is a general term for the balls used in a variety of ball sports. While the term is common in Dutch, it is understood in many languages as referring to sporting balls in general.

Inside lies a bladder, commonly latex or butyl, that holds air and determines pressure. Balls are often assembled from panels or a molded shell, and many are finished with coatings to resist water and wear. Inflation pressure is specified for each sport and affects bounce and performance.

Regulation and size vary by sport. Governing bodies publish official specifications for size, weight, circumference, and bounce, and many leagues require balls bearing an official certification mark. Examples include FIFA quality standards for footballs, FIBA approval for basketballs, ITF standards for tennis balls, and similar rules for volleyball and handball. These standards ensure consistent performance across venues and competitions and help guarantee player safety and fairness.

Manufacture and market dynamics center on a small number of global brands that produce sportballen for multiple sports. Quality control focuses on seam integrity, surface texture, water resistance, and consistent internal pressure. The history of sport balls spans from leather-covered bladders to modern synthetic designs enabling standardized, mass production.
