Spirohett is a term found in speculative biology and fictional world-building, used to describe a hypothetical spiral-shaped microorganism with a heterogeneous metabolism and a distinctive locomotion apparatus. The name combines elements suggesting spiral morphology ("spiro-") with an ending reminiscent of heterotrophy ("-hett"). Spirohetts are not recognized by mainstream microbiology and have no validated experimental evidence.

Morphology and physiology: Spirohetts are typically depicted as elongated, helical cells, often with multiple appendages that enable helical swimming. In proposed models, they are heterotrophic, deriving energy from organic compounds, and reproduce by binary fission. The cell envelope is described in speculative accounts as flexible, with traits drawn from both Gram-negative and Gram-positive features. Their imagined genomes are said to encode chemotaxis and motility systems suited to spiral locomotion.

Origin and status: The term originated in theoretical discussions and fictional literature rather than empirical microbiology. It is used as a thought experiment to illustrate constraints on morphology, metabolism, and movement, rather than as a documented organism. Because there is no experimental evidence, debates focus on whether stable spiral motility and heterotrophic metabolism could coexist under known physical and biochemical limits.
