Spiritualized

Spiritualized is a British space rock band formed in London in 1990 by Jason Pierce, following the dissolution of Spacemen 3. The project is noted for combining expansive guitar-driven passages with gospel-style choirs, orchestral textures, and hypnotic atmospheres.

Over the 1990s the lineup shifted, but Pierce remained the central figure and primary songwriter. Early releases such as Lazer Guided Melodies and the subsequent releases developed a signature approach that blends droning feedback, lush strings, organ, and choral arrangements. The sound drew on space rock, neo-psychedelia, gospel music, and experimental drone.

Notable albums include Lazer Guided Melodies (1992), Pure Phase (1995), and Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (1997), all of which helped define the group’s reputation. Later records such as Let It Come Down (2001) and Sweet Heart Sweet Light (2012) showcased broader pop structures and more explicit gospel influences, while maintaining Spiritualized's penchant for grand, cinematic productions.

Spiritualized have influenced a range of artists in indie rock, lo-fi, and dream pop, with praise often directed at Pierce’s ambitious production, emotional range, and willingness to experiment with form and scale. Their work has earned enduring critical respect, and the project continues to tour and release material.
