Spiralizer

A spiralizer is a kitchen tool that cuts vegetables and fruits into long spirals or ribbons. It is often used as a substitute for pasta, in salads, or as a decorative garnish. The core design involves a frame, sharp blades, and a feeding mechanism that guides produce through the blade to form uniform strands.

Manual spiralizers are typically hand-cranked or push-through devices, while electric models use a motor to drive the cutting action. Blades come in multiple configurations to produce spaghetti-like (thin) or fettuccine-like (thicker) strands, as well as wide ribbons. Most devices have a stainless steel blade set within a plastic housing, and many parts are removable for cleaning.

Common ingredients include firm vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, carrots, sweet potatoes, and beets; apples and other fruits can be spiralized for desserts or garnishes. For best results, trim and square off the ends, cut produce to fit the feed opening, and remove seeds or cores when appropriate. Some produce may require peeling, and thicker cores can clog certain models. Safety measures include using the hand guard and handling blades with care.

Spiralizers rose in popularity in the 2000s alongside interest in gluten-free and low-carbohydrate cooking. Today, many brands offer a range of manual and electric devices; maintenance typically involves hand washing or dishwasher-safe parts, drying thoroughly to prevent rust, and keeping blades covered when stored. Alternatives include mandolines and julienne peelers.
